Have you ever noticed how people who go through traumatic experiences often carry the effects like anxiety, depression, or emotional triggers for years afterward? Thankfully, in the human world, there are treatments and therapies designed to help us heal.

But what about our beloved animals? What support exists for them when they’ve endured trauma, neglect, or abuse? PTSD in dogs and cats is a real phenomenon.

And just like us, they can suffer deeply from painful experiences.

In fact, PTSD in dogs is far more common than many people realize. Dogs who have lived through harsh domestic environments, puppy mills, abandonment, or violence often carry invisible scars that shape their behavior and well-being.

These companions experience the full spectrum of emotions we do, and when trauma is left unresolved, it can manifest as ongoing fear, anxiety disorders, or aggression.

If you’ve welcomed a rescue animal or perhaps a dog who survived a puppy farm you probably already know how profound these wounds can be. Their imbalances run so deep that daily life may need to be adjusted around them.

For example, a dog with separation anxiety might make a quick trip to the store feel like a major event. A dog struggling with trauma triggered aggression may become terrified of strangers, turning something as simple as having guests over into a challenge.

And yet, despite the difficulties, your love and devotion don’t waver. That’s the gift of being a true guardian. Dogs who find a home with someone willing to understand their trauma and support their healing are incredibly fortunate.

Sadly, when traumatized animals are moved from home to home, their fear only deepens, and the patterns of PTSD in dogs become even harder to unravel.

So how do we recognize the signs of trauma in animals? And what truly helps them heal from PTSD and fear-based behaviors?

I explored these questions and shared holistic approaches to recovery in my second radio show, Healing Trauma in Animals.

Where I chatted about:

  • The signs of trauma in animals
  • The cost of carrying unresolved trauma
  • How we can heal their trauma
  • How our human trauma impacts them
  • Resolving past life traumas

The full show is available now for you to listen to below.
