Cats peeing blood can be a very frightening experience for you and them. And it’s definitely a time to take them to the vets for a check over.
However sometimes, despite you doing all you can to resolve this issue with medical care, it can linger. And become a chronic issue.
Leaving you with constant worry and hypervigilance every time they use the litter tray.
Or perhaps dreading having to leave them when you go away which can be a typical time when they have a flare up of this condition.
And of course not to mention the pain & discomfort it creates for your kitty personally.
So this blog explains from a Chinese Medicine perspective why cats start peeing blood in the first place and what you can do to resolve it from the root cause.
Giving you answers that work towards a longer more natural fix for you and your kitty.
Why Do Cats Pee Blood
To explain this I need to tell you about the two stages of imbalances that can lead to felines peeing blood.
The first stage tends to be when they develop what we call excess heat in the body. In a nutshell the kidneys regulate the temperature of the body. Where they act like a thermostat.
And many cats, due to continued stressors of any kind, can live off their adrenal energy a bit too much. And these glands sit right on top of the kidneys so when they are firing off too much, it drains the kidney energy.
Then what can happen is dryness or a lack of moisture builds in their system as the kidneys are not able to regulate the body temperature, leading to a lack of urine production.
And the smaller amount of urine that is formed is very concentrated and hot, which can burn the bladder wall and the urethra as it passes out.
This can cause cats to cry out or wince when peeing or just after. And they may also try to run to get away from the pain. Or scratch their litter tray furiously.
It can also make them irritable and fight with other cats. And when the kidney energy is sufficiently low, some blood may be present in the scanty urine.
The Next Stage Of Severity
If the kidney heat issue remains unresolved things get more severe as the spleen and liver get involved.
An out of balance kidney energy impacts how the spleen can transform fluids and food into nutritive energy for the body.
So when the spleen is compromised and is unable to process moisture from the diet, damp forms in the tissues which leads to heaviness and bloating.
And this dampness sinks down and lands into the bladder causing stagnation. When stagnation occurs that is when it also affects the liver.
The end result of all of this is pain for your beloved kitty with a frequent need to urinate. It is at this stage also you see cats peeing blood and they may also develop crystals and stones.
When the vet prescribes antibiotics at this stage that medicine does help take the heat out as they are cooling in nature, so the blood usually disappears. However they don’t have any impact on the underlying dampness, so usually in time all the symptoms return.
And that is how your kitty ends up with chronically peeing blood and recurrent bladder crystals or stones if they are that far along this continuum. As your bank account takes a continued hit, with no lasting resolution.
Holistic Home Solutions
First take an honest look at possible stressors in your kitties life & remove them or find a way to mitigate them as best you can.
Possible sources of stress:
- Fighting with other animals.
- Being bullied by other animals.
- No safe access to the outdoors or nature.
- Poor diet that is not species appropriate such as dry food.
- Your high anxiety or stress levels.
- Human’s not getting along in the household.
- Over exposure to chemicals in the home or through animal products such as flea, tick and worm repellants.
- No dedicated play time.
- Unresolved trauma especially in rescue & pedigree cats.
The more you can reduce their stress levels, the more harmonised their kidneys become. As the emotion of the kidneys and the bladder is fear.
So when that is healed & resolved the positive emotions of the kidneys and bladder come to the fore. And they are peace, calmness and true wisdom.
How amazing would it be for your kitty to operate from that state of wellness?
When you change their environment to be more in line with who they are as a species it can make all the difference. And taking action on those sources of stress helps you start to do that.
Even taking them off a dry food diet (of any make or brand) helps the dampness in the spleen start to turn around. And then instead give them a fresher diet.
If you want to learn how to do that I have put together a clear & easy to follow online course Feeding Dogs & Cats Well that gives you trusted types of fresh foods that you can buy for them today, whether you live in the US, UK or Europe.
